Words in the Dark

Shedding light on shady words

Thank God it’s …errr… Fryday?! 03/11/10

I know that many Catholics choose to eat fish on Fridays, the day of abstinence from meat, but since when did it become ‘Fryday’?

Còlpetrone is a beautiful winery in Umbria famous for producing one of the best examples of the region’s Montefalco di Sagrantino. As part of the Saiagricola group, its large and modern visitor centre includes a wine bar for guided tastings and a conference hall… fantastic, particularly by Umbrian standards. I was impressed. It had the space, tranquility and professionalism of wineries that I have visited in New Zealand. And then I saw the sign at the entrance and the line that shattered all my good impressions: ‘Open Mon / Fry’. ‘Fryday’? Simply unforgivable. And the next line: ‘Reservation suggested for visits and tasting’ should clearly be ‘Reservations required/recommended for visits and tastings’. It won’t stop me drinking Còlpetrone’s great wine but every time I do, I’ll think sadly of ‘Fryday’.

Thank God its &errr& Fryday?!
